Northampton Volunteer Car Scheme (NVCS)
NCVS provides community transport for elderly and disabled people, living
in Northampton (between postcodes NN1 – NN5).
NCVS enables registered passengers to get about with ease, convenience, and peace of mind, allowing them to maintain their independence for longer and helping to prevent social isolation.
Last year our volunteer drivers took passengers to 10,000 medically related appointments. They averaged 930 voluntary hours of journeys per month.
As well as being a friendly face and a listening ear to passengers, our drivers gain a huge amount of benefits from their volunteering roles. They are able to meet people and give something back to their local community. The flexibility of the role means they can fit it in with their other commitments.
WHAT CAN TRIPS BE USED FOR?
NVCS predominantly takes passengers to medical appointments within Northampton. We are also able to do a limited number of ‘long distance’ medical appointments such as to hospitals in neighbouring counties eg. Leicester, Birmingham and Oxford.
Please note that well-being and visiting appointments must be within the Northampton and medical appointments will take priority.
WHAT DOES IT COST?
To use the scheme, passengers must register. There is an annual membership fee of £35 and, in addition, passengers pay the volunteer driver 45/50p per mile on the day. There is a minimum charge of £2.50 per journey and passengers can take a carer or companion with them at no extra cost.
We rely on volunteers and so cannot guarantee to meet every single journey request.
Bookings should be made as well in advance as possible and must be made a minimum of two working days in advance (this does not include weekends or bank holidays).
