Northampton volunteer car scheme

This scheme provides community transport for elderly and disabled people, living in the Borough of Northampton and Grange Park.

The car scheme enables registered passengers to get about with ease, convenience, and peace of mind, allowing them to maintain their independence for longer and helping to prevent social isolation.

Last year the 33 volunteer drivers took passengers to over 13,500 medically related appointments.  They averaged 550 voluntary hours of journeys per month, which across the year would be equivalent to a value of £564,000 (using Heritage Lottery Fund how to value volunteers).

As well as being a friendly face and a listening ear to passengers, our drivers gain a huge amount of benefits from their volunteering roles.  They are able to meet other people and give something back to their local community.  The flexibility of the role means they can fit it in with their other commitments.

What can trips be used for?

The scheme predominantly takes passengers to medically related appointments within the Borough of Northampton.  We are also able to do a limited number of ‘long distance’ medical appointments such as to Hospitals in neighbouring Counties.

The scheme has recently expanded to take passengers to well-being classes and support groups as well as preventative classes to help the elderly and disabled people of Northampton to access the support they need, as well as play a fuller part in their local community, remain active and help prevent social isolation and recourse to public health services.

In addition, we have some capacity to take passengers to visit a close relative such as in a hospital or a care home.

Please note that well-being and visiting appointments must be within the Borough of Northampton and medical appointments will take priority.

What does it cost?

To use the scheme, passengers must register. There is an annual membership fee of £35 and in addition, passengers pay the volunteer driver 45- 50p per mile to cover their expenses.  There is a minimum charge of £2.50 and passengers can take an escort with them at no extra cost.

We rely on volunteers and so cannot guarantee to meet every single request, although it is rare that we cannot help. Bookings for the scheme should be made as well in advance as possible and must be made a minimum of two working days in advance (this does not include weekends).
